What is Freemasonry?

Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest fraternal organizations, built on principles of integrity, kindness, and charitable giving. It is a society of like-minded men who share common moral and ethical values and seek to improve themselves and their communities.

 

Is Freemasonry a secret society?

No, Freemasonry is not a secret society. It is a society with secrets, meaning it has private ceremonies and traditions. However, its values, membership, and activities are not hidden, and many lodges welcome public engagement.

 

Who can join Freemasonry?

Freemasonry is open to men who meet the basic requirements: they must be of good character, believe in a Supreme Being (regardless of religion), and be of legal age, typically 18 or 21 depending on jurisdiction. Some Masonic orders also admit women.

 

What happens at Masonic meetings?

Meetings involve a combination of ceremonial traditions, discussions about Masonic principles, and charitable initiatives. Members also engage in social and educational activities aimed at personal development and community service.

Do Freemasons worship a specific religion?

No, Freemasonry is not a religion and does not promote any particular faith. It requires members to believe in a Supreme Being but does not dictate religious beliefs or practices.

How do Freemasons contribute to society?

Freemasons are amongst the largest givers to charity in the UK. Commercial Lodge is proud to support smaller local charities within our community. Leaving the larger charities to be funded by our province and national and international charities service by the United Grand Lodge of England, our over seeing body.

 

Is Freemasonry expensive to join?

The annual dues for Commercial Lodge are currently £285 per year. To get the most out of your freemasonry you should attend the meal after each meeting, this is called the Festive Board. The cost for this is usually £35 -£45 and if you require wine on top you should budget for another £25. There will also be calls on you to give what you can in the name of charity but these are discretionary and £5-£15 a month is the normal ball park if you choose to give.

Can women become Freemasons?

Yes, there are Masonic organizations that admit women, such as Co-Freemasonry and the Order of Women Freemasons. However, traditional Freemasonry is male-only.

Does Freemasonry offer business networking opportunities?

While Freemasonry is not a business networking group, it fosters strong bonds of friendship and mutual support among members, which can sometimes lead to professional connections.

Are Freemasons involved in politics?

No, Freemasonry does not engage in political discussions or endorse any political party. Members are encouraged to hold their own beliefs, but political debates are not part of Masonic meetings.

Masonic symbols, such as the square and compass, are used to represent moral and philosophical lessons. They serve as reminders of ethical conduct and personal growth.
